August 4 - 9:30AM Saturday
DBD2 training ride #2 (Alpine Road)
| Distance: | 45 |
| Pace: | B | |
| Terrain: | 3 | |
There's a lot of climbing in this ride, but almost all of it is short-lived ... just like most of the climbing that you'll encounter on the event in September.
After a very brief warm-up leaving Mountain View, we get right into it with a clockwise trip around the Loyola Corners golf course, followed by the short climb to the top of Barley Hill. Then we'll do a little more climbing in the Los Altos Hills before we eventually emerge at the intersection of Altamont and Page Mill, where we'll descend to the Arastradero nature preserve. After a quick rest stop in Portola Valley, we'll tackle our significant climb of the day: the 3.3-mile ride to the end of Alpine Road (followed by the corresponding descent, of course). We'll travel the backside of the Portola loop into Menlo Park for our second rest stop.
We could have chosen to take a direct route back from there, but nooooo. Instead, we'll return to Los Altos Hills for the often-overlooked 0.8-mile climb of La Cresta Drive, and only then will we wind our way back to Foothill Expressway for the easy return into Mountain View.
This is a moderately challenging ride, but it's very doable. We'll have a SAG vehicle on the route. Strava reports about 3,300 feet of climbing for this ride.
This ride is Caltrain-friendly; the first southbound train from San Francisco arrives in Mountain View at 9:29 a.m.

Mt. Diablo
| Distance: | 41 |
| Pace: | C | |
| Terrain: | 5 | |
The weather is supposed to be cool this weekend in the East Bay so the conditions are perfect for an ascent of Mt. Diablo. We'll start at the Pleasant Hill BART Station and ride up the North Gate Rd to the Y Junction Ranger Station. From there we continue up-up-up including the demonic steep grade 50 yd climb to the summit. It's a long hard climb but the views are spectacular from here. We have a dramatic descent via the South Gate Rd. and then take lunch in Danville. We finish the ride with mostly flat terrain to the Lafayette BART Station. The ride basically has one long ten mile climb with a total alt. gain of around 3,800 ft. The climbing is all done in the first 16 miles.
We ride out at 9:20 am. So take the Pittsburgh Bay Point train from the 16th BART Station that leaves at 8:13 am. If you miss that one, you can catch the next train at 8:33 am. but no fruit cup for you if you do, plus we'll make you do the 50 yd. climb to the summit of Mt. Diablo twice and you'll buy both ride leaders lunch:)
There will only be three stops on the ride: the Y Junction, the Summit and then Lunch. We hope to finish around 2:00.

Not So Mellow Metric V2.0
| Distance: | 66 |
| Pace: | B | |
| Terrain: | 4 | |
Come join me on a new version of Jerome's previous Not So Mellow Metric, a route which was born from a wrong turn.
Starting in Sunnyvale, we'll make our way into Stevens Canyon, but no Mt. Eden Road today, nope. Instead we're headed for Redwood Gulch, a 1.4 mile climb up to Highway 9. From there we'll head to Los Gatos and tackle Hicks Road (the wrong turn that gave Jerome the idea for this evil route.) Hicks from Shannon starts out nice, and then the climb is broken up with some relief at Guadalupe Reservoir, and the summit is at Mt. Umunhum Road. The decent is steep and not fun.
But wait, there's more! From there, we'll make our way back to Los Gatos, over Highway 9 where we'll head up to Pierce Road and Mt. Eden Roads (in reverse.) Hey, we're already suffering, I've curiously wanted to do these two in reverse, so why not? If saner minds prevail, this option can be skipped.
Why are am I doing this? Because in August I will be in Maui, and the 35 mile climb to 10,000 feet on Mt. Haleakala is on the agenda. I'm also curious (thank you Strava), to repeat Redwood Gulch and Hicks after seeing an improvement last fall on Slug Gulch in Amador County.
Cross training may be on the agenda again today, or not. No worries.

This is the official monthly club ride for all members (guests are always welcome). The ride offers different distance and level options where once a month all DSSF club members can get out, ride and socialize with the club. The ride starts from Peet's in the Castro. There are three options so you can go at your own pace and distance so please pick the appropriate option to your level of ability, we want to make sure you enjoy the day. The rides split and regroup in Tiburon where we have lunch together as a group. This ride is usually on the second Saturday of each month; however there are a couple of exceptions for special events (see the calendar).
| Distance: | 27 Miles |
|---|
| Pace: | A/C |
|---|
| Terrain: | 3 |
|---|
Turn off at the end of the Sausalito bike path and go directly into Tiburon where the other riders will join you for lunch. You can ride back to San Francisco (or take the ferry to avoid climbing the Sausalito hill). This option is recommended for those who are newer to road cycling.
| Distance: | 47 Miles |

| Pace: | B/C |
|---|
| Terrain: | 3 |
|---|
This is a real fun loop with spectacular views! From Sausalito you have a small climb over Camino Alto before you head out and around the Tiburon Peninsula. This ride is recommended for the intermediate rider or for those who don't feel like the more strenuous third option.
| Distance: | 59 Miles |

| Pace: | C |
|---|
| Terrain: | 3 |

Split off from the group and make the climb up Conzelman in the Marin Headlands then climb up that small canyon, McCullough Road before heading back out to Sausalito to ride the Tiburon Loop. DBD2 training ride #3 (Stevens Canyon)
| Distance: | 50 |
| Pace: | B | |
| Terrain: | 3 | |
This week, we head up Stevens Canyon to the end of the paved road -- a gradual but persistent climb that takes us to an elevation of 1,125 feet. Next, we'll climb Mount Eden (but not Pierce!) and head into Saratoga for our first rest stop. Then it's over to Los Gatos and back into our second rest stop, which will be at the same location. (A savvy cyclist can figure out an easy short cut.) We finish with an out-and-back climb of Prospect Road to the Fremont Older Open Space Preserve. After that, it's mostly an easy return back to Mountain View ... except for our little run past Rancho San Antonio.
Total climbing on this ride is about 3,000 feet.
(If you're in or near San Francisco and want a closer option, consider attending today's DSSF Jersey Ride instead.)

DBD2 training ride #4 (Kings Mountain)
| Distance: | 55 |
| Pace: | B | |
| Terrain: | 4 | |
Kings Mountain is one of the signature climbs of the Peninsula, topping out at an elevation of 2,421 feet. (That's just a little bit less than Mt. Tam!) It's a long but mostly consistent climb of about 7%, so it's not stupidly steep. But you definitely need to pace yourself to have enough energy to make it to the top with grace and aplomb. After reaching the summit, we'll head back into Woodside on the Highway 84 descent.
But are we done? Of course not! After traveling around the backside of the Portola loop, we'll make our way into Los Altos Hills where we'll do a bit more climbing (Elena, Stonebrook, Magdalena) before we finally head back to Mountain View.
This ride has about 4,000 feet of climbing. Be sure to bring plenty of water and electrolyte replacement, especially if it's hot.

30th Anniversary Ride: Guerneville Coast Loop
| Distance: | 46 |
| Pace: | B | |
| Terrain: | 4 | |
The Guerneville Weekend, first offered in 1983, was for many years a mainstay of the Different Spokes ride calendar, eagerly awaited for each July by members tired of dreary San Francisco summer fog. Unfortunately I wasn't able to organize a return of the Guerneville Weekend as part of our 30th anniversary celebration. In lieu of the full monty, here is a ride that was almost always one of the Weekend rides: a loop up Austin Creek to the tiny town of Cazadero with a stop at the Cazadero General Store (or possibly a stop at Raymond's Bakery!),and up and out Fort Ross Road, a beautiful, redwood covered rustic climb, followed by a screaming descent down Meyers Grade to Highway 1. We'll catch lunch in Jenner at Cafe Aquatica before returning along River Road to Guerneville. On the Guerneville Weekend this loop was the "hard" ride, and the total elevation gain is about 4,600 feet, with most of it the ascents on Fort Ross Road.
Meet at Coffee Bazaar in downtown Guerneville to tank up before heading out promptly at 9:45 a.m.!

| Distance: | 60 |
| Pace: | B | |
| Terrain: | 3 | |
We take a week off from the giant climbs and spend some time on repeated smaller climbs of the type we'll be seeing on the event in September. We start with a familiar route through Stevens Canyon and up and over Mount Eden into Saratoga and onward to Los Gatos. Then it's up and over Shannon Road and into south San Jose for a quick run along Almaden Expressway. We'll return by doing the Kennedy Road climb into Los Gatos, revisiting the Sobey/Chester rollers from two weeks ago, and finishing with an easy return (no surprise last-minute hills this week) into Mountain View.
This ride has about 3,100 feet of climbing. Be sure to bring plenty of water and electrolyte replacement, especially if it's hot.
