San Francisco to San Jose

Distance: 77/81 mi.
Elevation gain: 3,833 ft.
Pace: C (moderate, occasional stops, a tad brisker)
Terrain: 3 (moderate hills with some challenges)

Meet up at 7:45 AM for a 8:00 AM ride out
GPS files, maps, and cue sheets:

1. San Francisco to Willow and Lincoln (San Jose) here.

IMPORTANT - route change - The San Andreas and Sawyer Camp Trails are closed for maintenance work. We'll take a .3 mile section of I-280 to bypass the San Andreas Trail, and ride through Hillsborough to bypass Sawyer Camp Trail.

2. Willow and Lincoln to San Jose Diridon here.
3. Willow and Lincoln to Berryessa BART here.

I'm not sure why, but there's something really cool about starting in the city, riding all day, and ending up way down in San Jose.

So starting from San Francisco, we'll head down Skyline Drive to the South Bay.

Ride out will be at 8:00 AM sharp from Peet's on Market Street.

If you want to do a shorter ride, you can head east at many points along the route towards a BART or Caltrain station. If you think you will want to do this but are not familiar with BART/Caltrain locations on the Peninsula, you will need to bring a smartphone or maps. Good bailout options include Millbrae (about 14 miles into the route), San Mateo (mile 20), Redwood City (mile 35), Palo Alto (mile 40), and Mountain View (mile 45).

Please note that I have posted the pace as "B-C" for this ride which means that you should be able to ride between 15 and 20 MPH in the flats. I would expect our rolling average, with hills included, to be in the 13-14 MPH range for this ride. Riders that are a little on the slower side of this are very welcome to join this ride but just be aware the group might be running a bit ahead of you.

If you want to take Caltrain home, we'll take the 5:12 PM Caltrain, which will get us to Millbrae at 6:26, 22nd and Pennsylvania at 6:46, and 4th and King at 6:52. (The pandemic still has weekend baby bullet service shut down.) By the way, the Giants have a day game that day; the Warriors won't have started yet, so we shouldn't have to deal with rowdy crowds.

BART riders can ride to Berryessa BART (6 miles from Willow and Lincoln) and hop on a train there.

We'll check the weather in the morning and if there's a 30% chance of rain, will cancel and let those who are registered know. (So please preregister.)

This ride is public-transit friendly. No car needed.

This is the 9th ride in a 2022 summer/fall series to help people gear up for fall riding, including Foxy's Fall Century from Davis. We'll have longer rides as the series progresses. We'll ride routes all over the Bay Area. Most routes will be without a whole lot of stop signs and lights. We'll try to avoid excessive smoke, and we'll cancel rides on days when the AQI is over 75. We'll try to avoid Tours de Heat as well.

Meals: We'll stop at Lunardi's in San Bruno (mile 15) for a snack, Roberts Market in Woodside (mile 33) for lunch and Los Gatos Coffee Roasters for a break (mile 62). If there's time,  the most-wonderful Willow Glen Frozen Yogurt at mile 75 awaits us at the end of the day.

Sweeps? No

Is this a "no rider left behind" ride? No, but we will have a few regroups. We will keep an eye out for each other but if you are a new rider please either know the route or bring a map in case you get dropped from the group.
