On this No Kings day of protests, let’s show our collective resistance by continuing to live our best lives on 2 wheels! We will also get a preview of the New Year Resolution Ride by going up to Mount Diablo Junction! (We won’t go up to the summit, which is another 5 miles and 1,700 ft higher.) We will meet at Pleasant Hill BART and take the Iron Horse and Contra Costa Canal Trails before taking back streets to North Gate Road and climb up to Mount Diablo Junction (around 2,150 ft above sea level). It’s also tarantula mating season and we’ll keep an eye for male spiders out on the prowl looking to mate! We’ll then do a SAFE descent on South Gate Road to Danville for lunch. After lunch, we’ll take an easy ride on Danville Blvd to Walnut Creek BART. If you drive to the start, you’ll have to ride about a mile more to return to Pleasant Hill BART. (And if schedule and timing permits, we’ll swing by the No Kings protest at Walnut Creek Broadway Plaza on our return.)
Note: The descent is serious. You should be both confident in your ability to descend prudently and cautiously amidst other cyclists and cars. The speed limit is 20 MPH. Car drivers routinely pass cyclists on curves even when unsafe.
As always, bring sunscreen, water, and a snack, along with your helmet, and an extra tube and tire changing kit.
We'll check the weather in the morning and if there's a 30% chance of rain, will cancel and let those who are registered know. So please preregister.
Is this a "no rider left behind" ride? No, but we will have a few regroups, but if you are unsure of the route, please know the route or print out or download a map or cue sheet
