The Route

The Bay Area has no shortage of dramatic hills, bike-friendly bridges, scenic waterfront recreational areas, and good food. Today’s ride will cover them all on a 42-mile trip, crossing the Carquinez Strait twice on 2 different bridges.

We start at Pleasant Hill BART.  Our route takes us into downtown Martinez where we will enjoy a refreshing coffee break at States Coffee (609 Ward Street, Martinez, CA 94553).  From there, we will climb up to Carquinez Scenic Drive.  Think of Carquinez Scenic Drive as the East Bay version of Paradise Drive, but for adults with strong legs.  You'll be riding with the hills on one side and bay views on the other.  If we're lucky, we might even hear the Capitol Corridor AMTRAK zooming down below.

After a short bathroom break before reaching Crockett, we head north on the Zampa Memorial Bridge (the far side of the bridge has a rest area for photo ops) to get to Benicia with its cute vintage Victorian homes.  We will lunch at the popular One House Bakery (918 1st Street, Benicia, CA 94510).  We return by crossing south on the Benicia-Martinez Bridge for a relatively relaxed ride back to Pleasant Hill.

As always, bring sunscreen, money, water, and a snack, along with your helmet, and an extra tube and tire changing kit and butt butter.

We'll check the weather in the morning and if there's likelihood of heavy rain, we will cancel and let those who are registered know. So please preregister.

Sweeps?  No.  Is this a "no rider left behind" ride?  No, but we will have a few regroups.  We will keep an eye out for each other, but if you are a new rider, please either know the route or bring a map in case you get dropped from the group.

Did you know…? Benicia was one of the first incorporated cities in California and served as the capital of the state from 1853 and 1854.
